This year I have taken on more roles in the PTA at my kids’ school. It is my way of giving back to the school as well as being able to keep an eye on my kids π I decided to help out in the hospitality committee. I mean I love to bake and so I might as well use the gifts I have to share with others. I am not artistic so I will leave Art Masterpiece to someone who could run that position way better than I ever could. Being a part of PTA helps me feel connected to my kids education and getting to know the teachers and staff that they are around everyday. Here are my tips on being the best PTA Hospitality Committee Chair.
-Talk to the teachers so that you know what things they like to eat, do, etc. After all you do’t want to plan things, pay for them, and then the teachers don’t like that food or activity. Sure you can plan surprises they don’t know about, but at least ask so you have a general idea of ways you can give back to them.
-Plan ahead. If you wait until last minute to buy your supplies or get volunteers then most likely you will be doing all the work yourself and you will be stressed out. You could also wind up paying more than you want for items because you waited. I have already started planning what I am doing for teacher appreciation week now even though it isn’t until May. I want to have a plan set out of what foods we are doing each day, what the theme will be, and how many people I need to make it run smoothly. Planning ahead will help you and those helping you enjoy the event more if everything is set in place early.
-Use VolunteerSpot to help you get volunteers for whatever it is you may need. One of the first events I am planning is decorating the teacher’s lounge for Halloween. It isn’t elaborate or will take very long, but I could use some extra hands in the setup and break down. It only takes a few minutes to set up an event, describe what you are needing, and putting all the volunteer times/dates in. VolunteerSpot lets you customize your event with clipart or your own photos. I love that I can see who has signed up for the spots on my computer or phone so that I can stay on top of my event. Best part of all is that it is free. Now there are upgrades that you can do that do cost money, but since I am mostly planning smaller events I can do it all for free and have one more tool in my arsenal for being the best PTA Hospitality Committee Chair.
-Keep a smile on your face. Being a committee chair can be stressful, but by keeping a smile on your face while you are doing your job will help you relieve some of the tension. You are on hospitality so you don’t want to be scowling when the teachers/staff come in for your event, you want to make them feel welcome and know that what you are doing for them comes from the heart.
I am so excited for what this year will bring and ways that I can give back by being the best PTA Hospitality Committee Chair.
