After browsing Pinterest more times than I care to say, I saw someone making crafts and such from used K-cups. Lots of people use them on an everyday basis and they just get thrown out. My thought was to try some of the things I saw on Pinterest so I have asked my friends and family to start saving K-cups for me. It is almost past time here in Texas to get seeds in the ground, so I have got to get a move on with my K-cup seed starters. It is cheap family fun that everyone will enjoy and get your hands a little dirty! It is also a way to celebrate Earth Day and not only recycling but also reusing.
Start off by removing the foil seal at the top of the K-cup. It is really easy. Then you can either just dump out the coffee grounds or you can save them for compost or sprinkle throughout your garden.
There is a mini filter inside that you can just rip right out then you are left with the perfect little seed starter container with a drainage hole in the bottom.
I also kept the box that the K-cups came in and cut it down to half size. It is the perfect container to hold 6 of the K-cup seed starters.
I actually didn’t even buy the seeds separately. I was making some butternut squash soup so I scooped the seeds out, removed the stingy part, and we instantly had seeds to plant. Recipe for the soup coming soon 🙂
We took everything outside and I let the kids fill the K-cups with about 3/4 full with dirt. They placed 2-3 seeds inside then covered full with dirt to the top.
Now we have 6 K-cup seed starters sitting in our Kitchen window, waiting to sprout before we replant out in the big garden. I can’t wait to see if they will grow in to full plants later on 🙂
This project was crazy easy and really didn’t cost much at all. I have several more ideas of things to do with K-cups so instead of just throwing them out, go ahead and save them up and find new projects to do with them throughout the year.
