I was going to be heading to Austin for a race with my sister in law. Austin is about 3 hours or so from where I live, so of course I want to get some good gas mileage. Heading out 290 is mostly freeway driving with a few small towns here and there. The 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES is a sub compact car that touts having some pretty high MPG for being a gas vehicle so it would be good for me to get the most mileage on my long drive.
At first glance the Mirage is a decent looking car. It was just going to be me on the drive to Austin so I didn’t need tons of room inside, but the Mirage boasts more room inside than I was expecting. Now don’t expect much in the way of trunk space. Like I said it is a compact car. My hubs was a bit disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to fit his golf clubs in the back. The interior of the car is just about what you would expect with a car that is one of the least expensive on the market. There is some pretty basic features and the cloth is not the best quality or feel. The seats are not very comfortable to be honest.
One upgrade that this model had was a touchscreen navigation system as well as back up camera. Man I could use that camera on my van since I almost fully ran over my trashcan while backing out of my garage today.. haha.
The drive to Austin wasn’t too bad. With only a 3 cylinder engine the Mitsubishi Mirage will go higher speeds, but it takes a while to get there. I also had to watch when I tried to pass people because there is no “get up and go” to pass quickly.
I can see the functionality of this type of vehicle in those who commute and are stuck in traffic a lot. You will get better gas mileage than most cars out there and it will get you from point A to point B. While I had the vehicle I averaged about 35-40 MPG. The base price of these cars start at $12,999. The one I was in was listed at $17, 105. It would also be a good car for first time drivers or college students trying to save money while studying.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to bash this car. There is a need in the market for all types of vehicles, but it is not the best fit for our family.
