Summer is officially here in Texas!! The kids had their last day yesterday so today meant sleeping in and no schedule. Well the sleeping in part didn’t really happen because of that lovely internal clock that has been set for the last 9 months. We have so much planned this summer, but before any of that can happen I have to go over our budget and make sure that we can afford it all. Walmart has been a big helper with this by us being able to sign up for Walmart Family Mobile.

Here are my tips for Saving for Summer Fun:

1. Menu Plan.

Menu Plan

I know what you are thinking. It is summer why on earth would I want to menu plan. The reason I say this is because I sure can get carried away at the grocery store when it comes to having food during summer or any time of year really. If you have kids like me, it seems like when they are home they want to eat non stop. The grocery bill has already gone up just for this week and we haven’t even started going to the pool yet which just seems to make my kids even more ravenous. I use eMeals which sends me a whole menu and grocery list based on what “diet” plan you want it catered to. I use the Paleo one, but they have lots to choose from. This can help keep

2. Find activities that don’t cost money.

Summer reading

Vacation Bible School(VBS) at your local church is usually free. I have already signed my kids up for two this summer. We also plan on heading to the library weekly so that the kids can check out books, spend some time indoors that is not at our house, and keep their brains active during these summer months. You can also find activities online that you can print out for your kids to do each day. Maybe have 30 minutes where they have to do some worksheets before they can play or swim. Of course, swimming will be high on the list of no cost activities.

3. Switch your cellular service to Walmart Family Mobile.

I was able to go in Walmart and get the ZTE ZMax for around $179.00. No contract. No hidden fees. Then I was able to get the starter kit for $25. The ZTE ZMax is not a run of the mill phone either. It has a huge screen, amazing graphics(the pictures are better than my iPhone), and it didn’t cost an arm and a leg just to get. Walmart Family Mobile rate plans are a superb deal. At just $29.88/month for 4G LTE service with unlimited talk, text, and 1G of data. Say What??!! You can upgrade the data package to 3G for another $15. I could get me and my husband service for possibly half of what I pay now. It is a post paid service so you pay monthly starting after your first month. Since I will be travelling even more this summer than I ever have then I need to make sure that my phone will be ready for the job.

4. Put the money not spent on school aside just for summer fun.

My daughter just finished preschool so that alone is a big chunk of our monthly budget that no longer has to be paid out. The beauty of this is that we will be able to use that money to go towards our summer fun. We were already used to that money going out each month so the best practice is to either put it in a special account just for summer activities or even just part of it, that way we know we have money set aside for when we do go out of town. Then the remainder can go towards other bills. I am sure you have some sort of activity, school, or sport that you are no longer paying for over the summer. Take that money and either put it away or find new ways to use it so that you can get the most out of summer.

Just by doing any combination of these, you will be able to save up your money so that you can have loads of summer fun with your family. I am already saving so that we can go to AdventureCon at Seaworld at the end of  June. Thanks Walmart Family Mobile for the great service at an affordable price. I will be able to stay connected while traveling and not have to worry about a crazy high bill at the end of the month. Now excuse me while I go play with my new phone 🙂

What helps me save money is going to places when they offer half off days and taking advantage of ‘free days’ at the museums and aquariums.

That sounds like a great plan. I would consider it for my son when he is old enough for a phone.

I always try to make a menu plan before I do my weekly shopping. Those on-the-spot items can be too tempting.

Number 4 is such a good tip! I can even apply it to work. Over the summer I don’t work as much so the money spent on gas and lunch can add up!
