Your kids are going back to school soon if not already. You have shopped for clothes, shoes, and supplies. There is one place that you may not think about in this back to school prep time and that is your home. There will be less in and out of doors, less opening and shutting the fridge, and less leaving every light on in the house. What this means is that your electricity bill will go down and your grocery bill won’t be sky high. What it also means is that you should have a checkup done on house so that it is in tip top condition. What I suggest is making a back to school home checklist to be sure your home is ready for the change in function throughout the school year.
One of my first items on the checklist is to reprogram the thermostat. While you have been at the house all summer, in and out, the thermostat has worked hard to keep the house cool and comfortable. As the kids go back to school and there may not be people in the house as much, you can set your thermostat to a higher temperature during the day to help save energy and give your A/C a break from all the hard work.
My second item on the back to school home checklist is to make sure the camera/security system has batteries that are fully charged. You want to make sure that your home is even more protected and watched now that there won’t be people at home as much. You also want to be more protected if you are a SAHM that won’t have the noise of multiple kids around the house.
What else should be on your Back to School Home Checklist?
- Check doors and locks that they are functioning
- Turn off appliances you won’t use as much
- Schedule your Quarterly NRG Home Services Maintenance
Your quarterly NRG home services maintenance should be top priority. You don’t want to be at work and kids at school to come home to a broken fridge or dryer that won’t work. Just like your kids get their checkups and shots before heading back to school, so should your appliances and home. NRG has come through on several occasions now where I only had to pay a service fee or sometimes nothing at all to fix an appliance or even our clogged drain line. It is service that pays for itself when you get a knowledgeable repair man that is professional and courteous. Don’t forget with your back to school home checklist to take another look at getting a home generator. Especially here in Texas where we have to worry about possible hurricanes, putting in a home generator is a smart decision that can save your sanity and money from spoiled food if the power goes out for an extended time.
Plan time to do your back to school home checklist. This will give you peace of mind that your home is protected and in working order as we head into the new school year.
