This week at Camp Warner Bros. we are delving into the world on crystal gems and even making our own. The movie this week we are featuring in our partnership with Warner Bros. is Steven Universe: The Movie. I have to admit that our family didn’t know anything about Steven Universe, but we have had a blast catching a glimpse at his world and his friends as they go on adventures.
The highlight of this week is a fun, sweet science experiment. Crystal Gems or rock candy are a fairly easy experiment that can show your kids how sugar dissolves into water and then can crystallize. This experiment is definitely a lesson in patience as well. Here is the basic Steven Universe inspired recipe:
We made a couple of different flavors as well as colors of Crystal Gem Candy by adding in some flavoring(Strawberry, Orange, Vanilla, and Cake Batter). While ours didn’t get super big, they were delicious. I would say that the campers were happy. We even started a few more by adding a bit more sugar and reheating the syrup.
Steven Universe: The Movie is out on Digital or DVD. It is based on the television show. It is based two years after the season finale and follows the Crystal Gems as they attempt to save Earth from a “bad” gem. We liked the theme that the movie helps convey that change can be a good thing and learning to adapt to new ways.
We hope you have fun making your own crystal gem candy and watching the movie. See you next week at camp!
