My kids love when I allow them to come help me out in the kitchen. It gives them an opportunity to learn knife skills, mixing, measuring, and more. Baking is the one our favorite things for the kids to help with and rarely will they turn down dessert. Strawberries is one of their favorite foods, so we decided to have a kids in the kitchen day making strawberry cookies. These cookies are filled with oats and other yummy goodness that the kids just gobble up. When the kids help make something in the kitchen, they are much more likely to want to eat it.

Besides the measuring and mixing, I like to use this time to help the kids learn how to chop fruit. We got them some plastic knives, but every once in awhile I let them use the real ones. This helps teach them a little more patience. We sure don’t need to lose any fingers just making cookies.
How kids can help chop for the strawberry cookies:

- Set up a cutting board with a damp cloth underneath. This will help give traction so that the board doesn’t slip.

- If you aren’t comfortable with a real knife, give your kids a plastic one. They have some great sets on Amazon.
- Give them a stool so that they can be at the proper height to cut.

- Show them first how to make the different cuts then let them go at it. Having them cut softer things like fruits is more desirable than harder vegetables especially until they are able to use a real knife.

- Set a bowl nearby so that they can scoop the chopped strawberries into it once they are done.
Now if your kids are anything like mine they tend to use their shirt as a napkin. My son especially is notorious for this. There could be a napkin right next to him on a table and he will still use his shirt and sometimes his hair… Oh my goodness boys!!

As you can see he didn’t like having the strawberry on his hands so he decided to do a nice big swipe on his WHITE shirt while we were baking. Seriously kid??!! There are times though as a parent when you just have to sit back and let them do their thing. It will wash out.. I hope… Since he was already messy I decided to let the kids have a flour fight in the backyard. Yes it probably would have been tons of fun in the kitchen, but momma sure didn’t want to clean up that mess. Outside flour fights can be hosed off! Inside flour fights are a pain.

Kids crave fun and activities that allow them to just be kids. I mean how many of you just want to go throw a handful of flour at someone? It is fun and lets you release all kinds of pent up energy. So get out there and have a little fun now and then and let the kids get messy. Memories are made when you let kids be kids.

Now I do have one little trick up my sleeve that will help with those stains that my lovely son made on his white shirt. all® PowerCore Pacs OXI are my tool that I use for keeping my kids clothes bright and clean. I can toss one in the wash and it does its’ thing while we get back to having family time and making more strawberry cookies. I love that Walmart carries it in packs of 50 so I don’t have to go back and get it quite so often. My only thing is they need to make an unscented one!! As with anything, follow the directions on the package so that you can make sure to use the right amount. They also offer all® POWERCORE™ Pacs Pacs Plus Removes Tough Odors, this one would work well for my husband’s stinky work shirts and jeans. What are ways that you let your kids be kids? Do you let them go out and make some mud pies in the yard after it rains?
