This review of Guardian of the Galaxy is brought to you by my hubby. I sent him to the pre-screening because I knew he would enjoy it along with some other men friends 🙂 Thanks Disney for inviting us!

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” finds space adventurer Peter Quill the object of a bounty hunt after stealing an orb coveted by a treacherous villain, but when Quill discovers the power it holds, he must find a way to rally the quartet of ragtag rivals hot on his trail to save the universe.

The new Marvel Movie, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, is almost assuredly going to be an absolute blockbuster.  The first thing you will notice in the 3D version is that the cinematography is absolutely stunning.  The visuals here are just as captivating as the storyline, and are the best I’ve ever seen, and yes, I saw “Avatar.”  As we have come to expect from a Marvel franchise movie, there is little down time and the story keeps moving along at a nice pace.

Director James Gunn had a strong cast to work with.  Chris Pratt (Peter Quill) is a perfect mix of funny and believable as the erst-while leader of this motley crew of characters.  If you don’t know who he is yet (I didn’t), you will after this movie.  He is likely to be the break out star of the summer.  Zoe Saldana, who is quickly becoming the go to leading lady in Sci-Fi (Avatar, Star Wars – Episode VII, Star Trek Into Darkness), shines as Gamora, the tough as nails adopted daughter of super villain Thanos.  There didn’t seem to be any misses on the cast, and their unforced, natural interactions helped the story move along nicely.

The soundtrack has a mash-up of 70’s hits that will keep most of the audience singing right along.  Songs by Blue Swede (“Hooked on a Feeling”), The Jackson 5 (“I want you back”), and Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (“Ain’t no mountain high enough”), among others, are perfectly timed and woven into the action happening on screen.  I expect the soundtrack to be a big seller in it’s own right.

The characters are compelling and relatable, flawed and likeable, and the absurdity of some of the plot is glassed over by five wonderful performances by the principle actors.  It’s a movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously and seems to just revel in the fun of the whole process.  Audiences should leave the theater identifying with the characters and wanting more.
