I have had my fair share of time in surgery and dealing with pain on many different levels. From the birth of my kids to my hysterectomy/cervical cancer surgery, there was a lot of pain after so much so that I did need pain relievers. It is all too common now that people are prescribed opioid based pain relievers, which expose patients to the risk of dependence and addiction. They are strong and are only meant to be taken for shorter periods of time before switching to lower dosage over the counter pain relievers. Our choices matter when it comes to what type of pain relievers we take after surgeries and other medical injuries.

Having a plan set when you are facing some sort of surgery is crucial. Talk to your doctor about what they typically prescribe. Let them know that you would like non-opioid based pain relief if at all possible. When you have a plan and voice your concerns and questions, you set yourself up for coping with the pain in a better fashion if your medical staff know.

Do research on ways to manage pain without prescriptions. There are a lot of resources out there about specific conditions and surgeries that can help you be more informed on what to expect should you need pain relief. The Plan Against Pain website has the tools to help you understand what you may go through and ways that you can find alternative pain management solutions.

Choices Matter is a campaign designed to educate and empower patients, caregivers, and physicians to discuss pain management options, including effective non-opioid options, prior to surgery. The use of non-opioid options before, during, and after surgery can significantly decrease or, in many cases, completely eliminate the need for opioids after many common procedures, including C-section deliveries.

Take the pledge today to talk to your doctor and have a plan in place to know what types of medication you want for when you have an upcoming procedure or just in general so that all of the medical staff know your wishes.
