Should you get a home warranty? If you own your home the easy answer to that is YES! We have been in our home over 4 years now. It was not until last year when NRG Home Services offered to give us a year’s home warranty that we realized how much we really needed one and how it saved us money. My husband is pretty handy so most minor things that broke in the house he was able to fix or we knew someone who could fix it fairly cheap. But you just never know when a major appliance or A/C is going to go out.
You have probably read the several posts I have written about our quarterly checkups and how NRG Home Services was able to fix a few minor issues that are old dryer was having with no charge to us. When I most realized that we needed the home warranty was when our 13 year old A/C unit wasn’t working properly.
See we started noticing water dripping from an outside pipe that had never had water coming out of it, then one day the A/C froze. It had happened a few times before and we could always reset it, but not this time. We paid $65 for a service call from NRG Home Warranty services and they sent a professional out to see what the problem was. He quickly found out that our main drain line was blocked, we needed a new part, and our drain pan was almost rusted out. The only thing “extra” we had to pay for was the drain pain. The warranty covered the servicing and part that was broken. Man was that a relief. Soon enough we will need another A/C unit and NRG gave us a quote so that we could expect how much a new system would be through them.
Should you get a home warranty?
Throughout the year there have been a couple more times that I have had to call a repair man out and it is just $65. If any other problems arise within 30 days they do not charge another fee. How awesome is that. If I had to call another random service repairman there is no telling what they would have charged just for the service call let alone the additional parts needed. I am still surprised at what all our NRG Home Services Warranty covers and the services provided.
As it was time for renewal, there was no question as to if we would renew. We have seen just how much it has saved us in repair costs just in one year. We saved 10% on the renewal costs which was awesome as well as saving even more since we paid for a full year at once. For less than $600 a year our appliances and home are covered.
So should you get a home warranty? Definitely.
Things to ask if you are looking for a home warranty:
- Check the cost versus coverage.
- Do they do quarterly checkups?
- What is the cost to have a repairman out?
- What appliances do they cover?
- What other services are provided versus just warranty coverage?
There are many more things you need to ask when looking at what home warranty is right for you, but for us NRG Home Services Warranty is what we are sticking with for now. Thanks NRG Home Services for gifting us our first year of service.
Agreed – it is so worth it!
