Whenever we moved in to the house we are in now I made the lower shelf in our pantry the kids shelf. The older they get the more they want to choose their own snacks and get their own cereal in the morning. It helps them to know where the foods that they are allowed to have are located. They don’t have to reach or climb up on a chair, simply stand and get their food. This shelf though… it becomes a huge mess really fast since kids are not known for putting things back where they found them. I came up with a system using plastic containers and labels so they know which foods go back to which spots. Here is how to organize the kid’s pantry shelf.
Since it is getting really close to back to school time I have been stocking up on food and drinks so that I am not having to constantly be at the store when it comes back to getting in to a routine. Their favorite snacks? Quaker Chewy Granola Bars, Gatorade(for lunches and soccer), and chips. Bonus about the weeks leading up to school is all the great sales happening.

Case in point: Randall’s grocery store who just so happens to be celebrating their 76th Anniversary along with Albertsons and other banner stores with a sale at all of their concepts here in Texas and around the country. I was able to take advantage of a deal they had of buying 8 participating PepsiCo products and all would be discounted even more as long as you use your loyalty card. I was able to get two types of Gatorade, Multi-pack of Cheetos/Doritos, 2 packs of Quaker Chewy Bars, Quaker Oatmeal for the bugs, Life Cereal, and some Quaker Instant Oats to make some after school cookie treats for the kids.
As you can see by the starting pictures, my pantry is a mess. It comes with the territory of having kids and having a pantry with shelves that are not nearly big enough. I use the plastic containers on some of my other shelves, but the kids shelf needs some more. One of the bins I put all of the snack type foods. One bin gets the chips. And the list goes on.
I used chalkboard sticky labels with a chalkboard pen to write what contents were inside the containers. Since mine are clear I really didn’t need to do this step, but it would help the kids not to take out all of the containers only the one where they could read what was inside. I am sneakily using it as a learning tool for my daughter as well since she is about to start Kindergarten.
Now doesn’t my pantry look so much neater??!! Well at least the kids shelf anyways 🙂 I guess I should organize the other shelves as well. I do wonder how long the kids will keep it this way? I have photographic proof that it was at least clean for an hour.
While you are thinking about back to school and getting organized, head to your local Albertsons, Tom Thumb, Vons, or other banner stores and take advantage of their huge Anniversary sale savings on Pepsi and PepsiCo products. The sale runs now through August 11th. So I want to know: How do you organize your pantry? Or do you just leave all the food in its original packaging and hope for the best?
