About two weeks ago I started a series of Cheap Family Fun #MemoryMakers. It was the Shower Cap Toss Game. The kids are still asking me to do that one. It would be a great game for a party for sure! So this week I am going to share how my kids did a make your own instruments day. I can’t take the credit for this one because they saw something on PBS where some kids made their own instruments and decided to take it upon themselves to see what kind of instrument they could come up with and I was all for letting their creativity shine.

Cheap Family Fun: How to Make Your Own Instruments

We almost always have a few small boxes around the house since I get review packages and other things that I order from Amazon. I also like to buy some of the kids snacks in bulk so needless to say there are always boxes around. The kids found a large goldfish box and the box my computer came in and begin formulating how they would make their instruments. Both wanted to make guitars.

Supplies Needed:

Small boxes

Paper

Tape or glue

long balloons or rubber bands

The kids took our butter knives and used them to cut the holes out of their own boxes. I couldn’t believe that actually got the to work. It was a lot of “sawing” but they were able to do it and there was no worry from me about them hurting themselves. (I guess if there is a will, there is a way…since I was busy with other housework) After they got the holes cut out, they taped the long balloons that we had on hand as the strings. Daddy had gotten them a kit to make their own balloon animals and it came with tons of balloons for only about $5 or so each.

Little Man then added a “neck” to his guitar out of paper, but it probably would have been better to use card stock or more cardboard so that it stands up more.

Their instruments didn’t make much noise, but they still had fun pretending that they were a great two piece band.

My son also discovered a new instrument by taking a juice bottle and stretching a rubber band over the whole container. It made a cute little sound when he would pluck at the rubber band.

These cost us very little to make since we already had most of the supplies around the house. What instrument would you make for Make your own instruments day?

Have you ever made instruments with your kids? What did you use? Leave a link if you have done this type of activity before 🙂
