When you hear the words puff pastry what comes to your mind? Do you dream of layered napoleon dessert? Do you envision dreams of cheese straws? Well you can do so much more with it than you even know. It doesn’t have to just be sweet. It can take on so many forms and really be the life of the party. I want to share with you a hosted party that I went to on behalf of Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry as well as a recipe that I made.
I was invited to an in home party where the hostess Mariah of Formula Mom threw a fabulous Birthday party that was simple, easy, and Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry was the star of the show. As a baker at heart I tend to think of puff pastry as something you use for sweet items, but she was able to transform the sheet of puff pastry in to hamburger “buns” to use on sliders. It is was so light and flaky and made a dish that didn’t weigh you down with a bunch of bread. Her candy stuffed cupcakes…oh my goodness divine. And we all sat there thinking of different candies that you can put inside to customize for any party. My favorite was the cinnamon “fries” with caramel drizzle or dipping sauce. She served them in a basket as well as individual containers that made it the prefect finger food. My son was a big fan of the mini pizzas and the “grilled” cheese puff bites.
The beauty of puff pastry is that it doesn’t take hours to bake up and transform in to so many wonderful dishes. The birthday party theme that Mariah chose could be changed based on taste preferences and go either all kiddie or gourmet adult food. Fantastic job Mariah. I was so inspired by the foods at the party that I went home and made a delicious puff pastry concoction of my own.
I give you the “Puff Daddy” Peach Pie Bites. These delectable little morsels were inspired by my dad who loves peach cobbler. I wasn’t really in the mood to make a full on peach cobbler for Father’s Day so I substituted this recipe instead. Pepperidge Farm has Puff Pastry Cups that you can bake up to hold just about anything that you can dream up like chicken salad or goat cheese with proscuito and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.
To start:
Open the puff pastry box, break the little squares at their crease lines then bake as directed on the package.
As the puff pastry is cooking, you can start the filling. Chop two fresh peaches and put into a sauce pan. Add two tablespoons or so of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon. Cook until the peaches are almost mushy and the sauce it makes is thick. Really it should cook just as long as the pastry does.
When the puff pastry comes out of the oven, you can take the handle of a spoon or spatula and poke down the center of the cups so that you have room to fill with the peach pie deliciousness. Top with a homemade whip cream and you are set for dessert at your house. Oh by the way if you make these just let me know so that I can come sample a few just so I know you made the recipe right 🙂
Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry is so versatile and can be used in so many applications in the food world. The flaky layers lends itself to appetizers, main dishes, to desserts. Truly a product that can appeal to many cuisines styles of cooking. It is perfect for home entertaining. Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry can be found in the freezer isle of grocery stores nationwide.
